Sample Statements About Social Justice
Sample Syllabus Statement:
As a faculty member, I am aware that students may be struggling with issues that might not be apparent to me or their fellow students. These challenges may include, but are not limited to: mental health struggles, learning differences, being unhoused, being undocumented, being a parent, caring for parents or other family members, experiencing food insecurity, a long commute, having a disability, being first generation, experiencing racial bias, experiencing bias due to gender and/or sexual orientation, lack of adequate access to technology, and more. Therefore, I ask you to keep in mind that your fellow students may experience the world differently than you do, and I believe these differences can allow us to build a stronger community. As the instructor, I will do my utmost to provide a class environment in which each student feels included and can freely ask questions and express opinions, as long as they can do so without causing harm to others. Harm can be physical or psychological. Harm can be caused by actions or by the expression of beliefs directed at another person or group of people that demeans and/or dehumanizes them. Moreover, I am mindful of the historical implicit and structural biases in society and our institution and include diverse experiences and perspectives in the curriculum to better understand a multiplicity of perspectives.
Faculty Oath (from Kathy Baur)
I vow to do my best to provide a class environment that is SAFE for each and every one of my students, and in which each and every student can freely ask questions, seek answers and express thoughts/ideas/opinions as long as the expressed thoughts/ideas/opinions do not cause harm to others. I vow to do my best to recognize the difference between respectful thoughts/ideas/opinions and harmful thoughts/ideas/opinions. I acknowledge that harm can be physical and/or psychological, that harm is not passive, and that harm is an outward action or expression of thought directed at another person or group of people that demeans and/or dehumanizes them. I recognize that harmful behavior or language can result from lack of knowledge and/or experience with others, and can also involve mental wellness issues. I vow to make efforts to support all students’ mental well being as well as their overall safety, and to educate each and every individual as respectfully as possible.
